Abstract

1363837 Coating iron alloys with Fe-Mn carbide TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO K K 3 April 1973 [8 April 1972] 15827/73 Heading C7F An iron base alloy having at least 0À1 carbon is formed with an Fe-Mn carbide layer by heating (650 to 1200‹ C.) in a pack comprising an alkali metal or ammonium fluoborate, an inert powder, e.g. alumina, silica, boron nitride or chromic oxide, and Mn or Mn-Fe alloy. The reaction may take place in air or an inert gas. The substrate may be case hardened before the diffusion process.
