Abstract

1363647 Bale-loading apparatus A C BUCHANAN and W G THOMSON 13 Oct 1971 [16 July 1970] 34553/70 Headings B8H and B8E Apparatus for loading bales of hay from the ground and depositing them on to a trailer 2 comprises a boom 1 having a base 6 pivotally mounted by a shaft Y on the trailer, a bale grab 3 being carried by the boom at its outer end and consisting of fixed arms 13, 14 and a movable jaw 15, a ram 27 being pivotally connected at 25 to one end of a lever 22 pivotally mounted on the base 6 by means of a shaft 24 its other end being pivotally connected at 23 to a rod 18 which is connected to a link 19 connected to the jaw 15. In operation the boom initially extends downwardly and laterally of the trailer 2, the ram 27 is actuated and thus moves an element 28 located on the end of the lever 22 into engagement with a tongue 29 on the base 6, the lever 22 thus pivoting anticlockwise and, through the resulting movement of rod 18 and link 19, causes the jaw 15 to move to the left in Fig. 2 to grab a bale 31. Further movement of the piston-rod 26 causes the boom 1 and bale grab 3 to swing upwards, and when the piston-rod 26 is fully extended the boom 1 is in a vertical position with the bale grab 3 in position over the trailer 2. Due to the momentum and/or the overhanging weight of the bale 31 the boom 1 continues to swing inwards causing the shaft 24 to move upwardly and thus the lever 22 to pivot clockwise about the point 25 due to the fact that the lever 22 is connected to the pistonrod 26 which is at maximum extension, the rod 18 being thus caused to move to open the jaw 15 and thus release the bale 31 which drops on to the trailer 2.
