Abstract

1362281 Reinforced glass pipes H LAUSCH 17 Aug 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 38554/71 Headings F2G and F2P In a method of making a reinforced glass tube the glass tube is first coated with a sheath of plastics material and thereafter the plastics is coated with a metal sheath (e.g. nickel-iron alloy) which is applied by a metal spraying method. Such tubes are shown in Fig. 1 together with suitable end fittings. In tube A the metal sheath is stopped short of the end of the tube so that the plastics material 5 engages a triangular groove 4 in the fitting 2, the fitting being secured to the metal sheath by welding. In tube C a screw thread is cut in the plastics coating prior to the application of the metal sheath 12, the resulting screw thread 15 formed in the metal being finish machined before application of the screw threaded flange 8. Whereas tubes A and C have conically flared ends to the glass tube this may be replaced by rounded peripheral ridges as shown in tube B (which is otherwise similar to tube C). Gaskets of the form shown at 18 are advantageously used.
