Abstract

1361504 Fire-fighting gels GELCO-PROJECT LINDREN & CO HANDELSBOLAG 10 Sept 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 42250/71 Heading A5A [Also in Division B1] A fire-fighting gel is prepared by supplying a gel-forming agent to liquid flowing in a conduit at such position and in such proporthat the gel is fully formed only at as near the point of use or discharge. The method is preferably carried out in more than one step. As shown water flowing in a conduit 4 passes through an inner coaxial conduit 5 and partly through a by-pass 9. Gel forming agent is supplied through an inlet 6 to the inner conduit 5 and mixes therein with the water, the mixture so formed being further diluted in the conduit 4 with the water from the by-pass. The proportion of gel-forming agent may be controlled by valves 8, 10 or gear pumps. Conduits 4, 5 may be flexible hoses. The gel forming agent may comprise a surface-active polyethylene oxide derivative which may comprise alkyl, aryl or naphthyl polyglycol ethers, and a volatile hydrocarbon heavy or light oil such as paraffin or white spirit. The surface active compound may be 10-70% of the gelling agent and the concentration of gelling agent in the final water gel 0.1-1.0% and preferably 2-4%.
