Abstract

1360403 Porous carbonaceous material KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 28 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 50263/71 Heading C1A Porous carbonaceous material is made by binding hollow carbon microspheres with an organic binding agent, compacting the spheres and agent to form a green compact and carbonizing the compact in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Preferably the agent is a thermosetting resin dissolved or diluted with an organic solvent. The compact may be heated to cure the resin prior to carbonization. The microspheres have an average diameter of from 1Á to 1,000 Á, a bulk density of from 0À01 to 0À8 g./c.c., and a wall density of from 0À1 to 100 Á The binding agent may be a phenol, furfuryl, furfural, epoxy, silicone, alkyd, vinyl alcohol, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, or unsaturated polyester resin, or cellulose, starch, maltose, or caramel. During carbonization the heating rate is preferably 0À5 to 10‹ C./min. between 200 and 1,000‹ C., and rapidly between 1,000 and 2,000. The product may be used for heat and sound insulation, filters, reaction columns or diaphragms.
