Abstract

Carbonaceous bodies are made by impregnating cellulose fibres with a thermosetting resin and (a) initiating cure of the resin by maintaining the temperature of the impregnated fibres at up to 150 DEG C. for at least 20 hours, (b) slowly raising the temperature of the impregnated fibres at a rate not exceeding 20 DEG C. per hour up to 250 DEG C., (c) raising the temperature at a rate not exceeding 50 DEG C. per hour up to at least 720 DEG C., (d) subsequently raising the temperature by not more than 100 DEG C. per hour up to at least 900 DEG C., the heat treatment of the resin taking place in an inert atmosphere. A furan resin, e.g. a furfuraldehyde/furfuryl alcohol condensation product, phenol formaldehyde or rescorcinol formaldehyde resin may be used. An acid catalyst may be used to initiate cure, e.g. H3PO4 or an easily saponifiable ester such as methyl p-toluene sulphonate. The fibres may be of regenerated cellulose or rayon which has not been produced by the acetate or nitrate processes. The impregnation may be assisted by applying air pressure with or without degassing of the fibres before adding the resin. The impregnated fibres may be shaped and/or moulded before carbonization.
