Abstract
1346735 Carbon bodies SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT GmbH 2 Feb 1972 [2 Feb 1971] 4940/72 Heading C1A Carbon bodies are formed by heating shaped bodies of cardboard, pasteboard, chipboard or plywood to at least 120‹ C., impregnating the so-heated body with a thermosetting synthetic resin, hardening the resin by heating the impregnated body to 150‹ to 250‹ C. and then further heating the body to at least 800‹ C. to achieve carbonization of the body and the impregnant. The body may be a corrugated sheet or a tube. The amount of impregnant used may be 200-500% by wt. of the cellulose containing structure. The preferred resins are phenol-formaldehyde, furan, alkyd or epoxy resins. The resin may contain a hardening catalyst which is an aryl sulphonate. The impregnation may be effected under pressure and particular heating schedules are given. Thicker bodies may be obtained by laminating several impregnated structures prior to carbonization.
