Abstract

1359623 S G iron SULZER BROS Ltd 18 Aug 1972 [24 Aug 1971] 38646/72 Headings C7A and C7D In the manufacture of S. G. iron the base material is treated with 0À07 to 0À15% of Mg, after which reaction products are removed and the iron heated to at least 1480‹C with agitation until the amount of dissolved of Mg is no longer adequate to form spheroidal graphite. The reaction products are again removed, and just sufficient Mg added to form spheroidal graphite. Heating may be in an induction furnace, which also provides agitation, and treatment by pouring on to a master alloy lying on the floor of a ladle and covered with a protective material. The master alloy may contain by weight Mg 9-11% Ca 1À8-2À8% mischmetall 0À8-1% Si 45-50% Fe balance. Preferably the pretreatment with magnesium is such as to lower the sulphur content to below 0À0%.
