Abstract
1358499 Setting wool slivers; false twister KANEBO KK 18 July 1972 [19 July 1971 22 Feb 1972] 33537/72 Headings DID and D1F In order to temporarily decrimp a wool sliver and set said decrimping during the manufacture of a top in a worsted spinning process, the wool sliver is subjected to heat and moisture, heated under tension whilst being false twisted by first twisting and then untwisting and then dried under a weaker tension and a temperature no higher than the false twisting step. The sliver 1 is fed through steam chamber 5, which raises the moisture content of the sliver to 20 to 30% and the temperature to 70 to 110‹C and then to nipping roller unit 4 in chamber 5' which is heated by steam pipe P and by steam entering between members 3c, 3d. Between rolls 4 and twister 6 the sliver is twisted and between twister 6 and rolls 7 it is untwisted. The rolls 7 are driven at a common circumferential speed in excess of that of rolls 4, thereby drafting the sliver by 20 to 40% between rolls 4 and twister 6 to remove the crimps. The distance between twister 6 and rolls 7 is less than the average fibre length (6-7 cm) to prevent fibre slipping whilst the sliver is untwisted. As shown in Fig. 6 the twister comprises a tube 61 rotated in bearing 63 by driven sprocket 64, the sliver being cranked by passage over ring 62. Preferably the sliver spends at least 30 seconds in the twisting zone and receives 15-40 turns/ metre. Drying occurs in chamber 9 during the passage over heated rolls 8a-8e in the presence of a stream of dry air, the temperature being lower than that of the twisting chamber.
