Abstract

1448302 Crimping yarns NATIONAL SPINNING CO INC 23 April 1974 [10 May 1973] 17788/74 Heading D1F [Also in Division B8] To make bulked yarn, a continuous filament synthetic yarn having pre-exsistent latent crimp characteristics has imparted to it a twist between 2.5 and 4.5 t.p.i., the twisted yarn is passed through a first treatment zone to develop the crimp characteristics and render them manifest, the yarn is removed from the zone under minimum tension and is immediately relieved of the tension, the yarn is deposited as a uniform, uncompacted mass in a container, and the yarn in the container is treated in a second zone to set the manifest crimp. Two yarns, e.g. of nylon, each with a given twist are plied with the given twist but in the opposite direction. Plied yarn 10, Fig. 1, is wound on rotating mandrel 18 by flier 19. The mandrel comprises converging conveyor belts 20, e.g. four of six belts, whose travelling outer surfaces carry spaced yarn windings along the mandrel. The windings supported slackly on the taping mandrel are treated by heated, moistened air (e.g. at 180‹-190‹F dry bulb, 170‹ wet bulb) circulated in chambers 21, 23 to develop latent crimp properties. The windings are partially dried by an air current in chamber 25. The yarn is drawn over end from the mandrel by rolls 32, 33 and deposited in rotating container 34. The yarn passes through guide 27, and is traversed longitudinally of the rolls, and radially between the centre and the circumference of the container, by guide 28. The full container is autoclaved at 240-270‹F in saturated steam. Two ends of plied yarn may be treated on the mandrel simultaneously, the withdrawn ends being deposited in side-by-side containers, Fig. 2. Rolls 30, 32 may be rubber covered, or roll 32 rubber covered and roll 30 provided with a serrated steel surface.
