Abstract

1336932 Twisted threads COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION 19 April 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 21446/71 Headings DID D1F DIN and DIW A method of forming a twisted thread assembly from at least two textile strands 6 comprises twisting a strand so that it has repeated along its length alternating zones of opposite twist and converging the twisted strand with another strand and allowing it to twist around that other strand to form a twisted thread assembly 11, and the method is characterised by engaging the converged strands with a surface which does not prevent the assembly of strands from rotating at the position of engagement with the surface but does inhibit separation of the converged strands under the influence of ballooning forces generated by rotation of the strands as they twist ply together. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of strands 6 are fed to a pair of reciprocating strand twisting rollers 3, 4, where alternating zones of opposite twist are imparted to the strands. The strands 6 after passing the nip of the rollers 3, 4, which are preferably rubber covered, are brought together in pairs at converging guides 8. One strand in each pair is passed round a phasing guide 7 to bring about the desired phasing between the strands to be converged. The converged strands twist about one another and are passed through guides 9 in a pivoted plate 13, and thence to guides 10 before passing to a package winding station. During threading-up of the apparatus the plate 13 is swung about hinge 14 and the yarn 11 assumes a direct line path from the convergence guide 8 to the guide 10. The plate 13 is then swung back into position and so engages the yarn 11 and pulls it out of the direct line path. The plate may be replaced by a surface which engages the converged strands as they travel in a straight line path and extends over a part of that path. The surface may be provided with grooves to receive the yarns. Alternatively tubular guides or open channels could engage the yarns over straight lengths to prevent ballooning.
