Abstract

1358116 Marine lifesaving buoys K FURUYA and T MORIMOTO 24 Nov 1972 [1 Dec 1971] 54542/72 Heading B7U A lifebuoy which may be adapted so as to be thrown before it inflates comprises a pressurized gas container having a nozzle valve that is opened by pressing it inwardly of the container; a holder secured over the nozzle valve; a nozzle tube slidably supported by the holder and having one end fitted over the nozzle valve; resilient means to urge the nozzle tube in the direction of the container to open the nozzle valve; removable means to maintain the nozzle tube away from the nozzle valve against the action of the resilient means so as to keep the valve closed and an inflatable float connected to the other end of the nozzle tube. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), a container 1 of compressed gas is attached to a collapsible, inflatable float and by a nozzle tube 13 which is urged towards the container 1, in order to open the valve 9 to inflate the float, by a spring 8. Normally the tube 13 is prevented from such movement by a check strip 10 having a keyholeshaped aperture 11 whose narrower portion 12 engages a thickened portion of the tube. To inflate the float, the strip 10 is pushed (to the left in Fig. 1) so that tube 13 is freed. In a variation enabling the buoy to be thrown completely uninflated, the tube 13 is held away from the gas container by a hollow cylindrical spacer made of a substance which readily collapses on contact with water.
