Abstract

1357784 Drawing; extruding; forging; stamping ALUMINIUM SUISSE SA 26 July 1971 [4 Aug 1970] 34911/71 Headings B3P B3H and B3Q A die for a metal shaping operation, e.g. drawing, stamping, forging, swaging, comprises coaxial rings 11, 12 mounted in a steel collar 13, the die ring 11 being thinner and having a greater modulus of elasticity than the support ring 12. The die ring 11 has a modulus of elasticity of 30,000-65,000 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP> whilst the support ring 12 has a modulus of elasticity of 28,000- 55,000 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP>. In one embodiment the die is used to make a container from a blank which is placed above an anvil 2 and drawn by a punch 3. The ring 11 of the die has a lower resistance to flexure than the ring 12 and may comprise sintered tungsten carbide containing cobalt, cast tungsten carbide, boron carbide or an alumina ceramic. The ring 12 may be of tungsten carbide containing at least 6% cobalt, cast titanium carbide or Stellite (Registered Trade Mark). One or both of the rings 11, 12 is clad with a ductile material by electroplating, tinning, flame spraying or electrostatic deposition in order to obtain perfect contact between the rings. In another embodiment, a ring of ductile material is positioned between the rings (Fig. 6, not shown). The rings 11, 12 may be mounted in two collars (13a, 13b) (Fig. 5, not shown).
