Abstract

1357372 Dispersion solvent for photographic material MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 15 June 1971 [16 June 1970] 28063/71 Heading G2C A colloidal hydrophilic layer contains a dispersed solution of a photographic additive (which is a coupler or other chemical or a substance produced in the layer upon development e.g. dyes which constitute a colour image) in a water-immiscible formamide solvent. The additive may be a coupler, anti-oxidant or ultraviolet absorbing compound. The formamide solvent may have the formula:- HCONR 1 R 2 wherein R 1 and R 2 are each H, alkyl or aryl provided that when either of R 1 and R 2 is H, the other is aryl, or alkyl having at least 5C, and, when R 1 and R 2 are both alkyl, the total number of atoms in R 1 and R 2 is at least 7. The formamide may be e.g. N-benzyl-form amide, N- (p-methyl) benzyl-N-butylformamide, N-(pmethyl) benzyl-N-carboethoxymethylformamide, N, N-dibenzylformamide or N, N-dibutylformamide. The hydrophilic layer may be a photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer.
