Abstract

1357241 Treating exhaust gas BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR CORP Ltd 25 Jan 1973 [7 Jan 1972] 777/72 Heading F1B I.C. engine exhaust system comprises a container, an exhaust gas inlet for connection to an exhaust outlet from an engine, an exhaust gas outlet from the container, at least one catalyst carrier including catalyst material and mounting means disposing the, or each, catalyst carrier within the container between exhaust gas inlet and exhaust gas outlet, the mounting means further spacing the carrier apart from the container except in the vicinity of the exhaust gas outlet. A stainless steel container 10 has inlets 11, 12, 13 each provided with a flange for attachment to the engine, and an outlet 16 having a flange 17 for attachment to an exhaust pipe, the outlet being connected to the container by a flange 19. The container is lined with heat-insulating material 21. The catalyst carrier 18 includes a flange 20 which is bolted to the flange 19 to make a gas-tight joint. An internal flange 24 supports a woven stainless steel mesh 25 which in turn supports a porous aggregation 26 of catalyst granules. The top of the carrier is covered by a foraminous stainless steel plate 22. The catalyst granules consist of an inert ceramic support for a catalyst which promotes the reduction of oxides of nitrogen. In a first modification Fig.3 (not shown), the catalyst granules rest on for aminous stainless steel plates (47) which themselves rest on corrugated supports 49 and 50. In a second mofidication, Fig. 5 (not shown) two catalyst granule support trays are provided, an upper tray which supports a reduction catalyst and a lower tray which supports an oxidation catalyst. An oxygen containing gas e. g. air, is admitted to the space between the trays. An opening, closed by a removable cap, is provided in the side of the container, opposite each section of the catalyst, for acces to the catalyst. In a third modification, Fig. 7 a baffle 81 is located centrally of the carrier and deflects the gas as shown by the arrows to increase the flow path length. Air injection tubes 87 are provided. In a fourth modification, Fig. 9 two brackets 92, mounted on the cover plate of the carrier, supporting a short spindle 94, against which one end of a spring-loaded arm bears, to provide support for the carrier, without restricting temperature induced dimensional changes.
