Abstract

1434115 Silencing I C engine exhaust gas K AOI 22 Aug 1973 [8 Sept 1972 18 Sept 1972] 39847/73 Heading FIB [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] Internal combustion engine exhaust gas is purified by passage through a container 3 in which lead is trapped, a bed of granular catalyst 6 in a container 4 for the conversion of CO to CO 2 and a purifier 5 having chambers 5c, 5d and 5e in which gas expansion, vapour condensation and retention of impurities, e.g. carbon particles and heavy metals, respectively, occurs. Spiral metal filaments, porous cylindrical annular (7'), Fig. 2 (not shown), or thick porous plates (7), Fig. 4 (not shown) in the container 3 trap the lead. The plate 3e and the thick porous plates, (Fig. 4), may be formed of metal sponge or ceramic material containing alumina. Air is fed to the container 3 through the inlet 3h. The purifier 5 has a tangential inlet to an expansion chamber 5a and the chambers 5e contain heat-resistant fibres.
