Abstract

135,674. Waring, E., and Waring, W. Dec. 31, 1918. Electrode furnaces.-An undulating hearth contains a number of electrodes or groups of electrodes arranged both in the lower and in the higher parts of the hearth. The circular furnace shown has an annular depression 2 and a raised central portion 3. Electrodes consisting of metal studs 4 project in groups of three or four from water-cooled boxes 5. A circle comprising, say, six groups A is situated in the outer raised part of the hearth, and another circle of groups B in the depressed part. Two three-phase mains are each connected to alternate groups of the inner and outer circles, the connexions being made by wires attached to adjacent ends of the water-cooled boxes of the two circles. A system of electrodes connected to the third main consists of groups C radiating from the centre between groups of the inner circles. Electrodes nearer the centre of the furnace are larger than those more remote, and the electrodes in the outer circle are more numerous than those in the inner circle. A rolling motion is stated to be produced in the charge.
