Abstract

Electrode furnaces.-Parts of a furnace wall are formed by composite electrodes having inclined faces and being curved as viewed in plan. The current path in each electrode thus decreases in cross-sectional area from the outer to the inner face, and the conductivity of the electrode material may also vary. Two such electrodes A may form the semi-conical ends of a furnace of oblong form. The electrodes may be of material conductive only after heating, which may be effected by resistances D arranged in layers transverse to the main current flow and consisting of series of iron or other bars, or of spiral or zig-zag strips or wires. It is stated that by this construction of the electrodes the loss of heat therefrom is minimized. Preliminary heating may also be effected by a hot charge. A transformer E is removably arranged beneath the furnace so that its secondary circuit includes the charge, the electrodes, and their metal backings B.
