Abstract
598,485. Moving gases. ACE ELECTRONICS, Ltd., WELCH, L. C., and COOK, R. J. Sept. 5, 1945, No. 22859. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XL] Apparatus for blowing air and for separating dust, fog and solid or liquid particles therefrom consists of a conduit 1 of glass or other insulating material having a series of electrodes 6 mounted therein at intervals and provided with discharge points 7 disposed in the direction of the air flow, alternate electrodes being connected to the opposite poles of a D.C. source of high potential. The electrodes 6 are annular and formed of sheet metal rolled to present rounded external surfaces ; the points 7 project inwards towards the axis of the conduit. Preferably the external contacts for the current supply are in the form of similar rings 9. In a modification Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), a number of the conduits may be nested together in a common conduit which is sheathed by an external electrostatic shield ; the external rings 9 of the conduits are in contact to provide a common supply contact, and the intervening spaces may be filled with an insulating compound such as petroleum jelly.
