Abstract

473,857. Electrostatic machines. AKTIEBOLAGET ELEKTROLUX. Jan. 16, 1937, No. 1372. Convention date, Jan. 17, 1936. [Class 35] High voltage electricity is produced electrostatically by passing particles carried in a gas stream along a channel with the inner surface composed of materials having different frictional electric properties arranged axially in series. In the form shown, a gas stream carrying lycopodium particles passes along the tube consisting of glass tube 1 and a rubber tube 2, positive and negative charges being collected by prongs 3 and 4 respectively. There may be a plurality of glass and rubber tubes arranged alternately, and metal and semi-conductors may be used. In the form shown in Fig. 3, insulating tubes 7, 9 are separated by conducting tube 8 surrounded by a metallic sphere 10 serving as a corona protective device. The sphere 10 is first charged by friction and the potential difference between sphere 10 and conductor 11 which encloses it provides point discharge of the spike 12 which then charges the particles. In a modification, the tube 8 has an insulating inner surface with a spike connected to the conductor 10. The tube may be provided with internal deflecting surfaces or may be bent into the form of a coil.
