Abstract

1356713 Railway systems J F SUTTON 11 Sept 1972 42014/72 Heading B7L [Also in Division F2] A transportation system comprises a track in the form of a concrete roadway 16 and a vehicle 15 movable therealong, the track including a flat resilient belt 21 that is continuously driven along the track at a constant speed, and the vehicle 15 including a belt wheel 39 engaged with the belt and a roadway wheel 40 engaged with the roadway 16, with a transmission including a gear train connected between the wheels and allowing the belt wheel 39 to rotate independently of the roadway wheel 40, and a clutch 50 that in operation selectively causes the belt wheel 39 to rotate the roadway wheel 40 through the gear train. The belt 21 is preferably of rubber with a cable core with a roughened upper side and a smooth lower side. The belt runs in a track in the roadway 16 on a liner 36 with a lubricant. A guide track 32 is provided along the roadway 16 for engagement by guide wheels 35 on the vehicle 15. In alternative embodiments the guide track is provided in a slot in the roadway or at the edges of the vehicle. The transmission (Fig. 8) comprises a gear 44 rotatable with the belt wheel 39, the gear 44 meshing with planet gears 45 mounted on a carrier 46. Shafts 49 couple the gears 45 to planet gears 47 meshing with a gear 48 rotatable with the roadway wheel 40. A clutch 50 is provided to brake the carrier 46. When the clutch is disengaged the wheel 39 freewheels on the belt 21, but as it is progressively engaged power is transmitted to rotate the wheel 40 and thus move the vehicle. By suitable choice of gearing the vehicle may have a maximum speed greater than that of the belt 21. In alternative embodiments the planet carrier is braked by means of a clutch on the roadway wheel shaft the clutch being coupled to a belt driving a pinion engaging with teeth on the planet carrier. Where speed variation is not required a simple clutch may be interposed between the wheel 39 and reduction gearing driving the wheel 40.
