Abstract

1356016 Making rectangular ducts; seaming; bending SNAPPY Inc 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970] 21972/71 Headings B3A B3J and B3E [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for forming a rectangular duct from pairs of metal sheets comprises a number of rotary dies arranged on a frame so as to engage the lateral edges of the metal sheets and form them into a rectangular duct as the sheets pass longitudinally through the apparatus. A pair of sheets 5, 6 which may be wound together on a single roll 4, or wound on two separate rolls, are progressively shaped and guided at stations 1-11, Fig. 12. The sheets are gripped by resiliently mounted rolls 23, 28, Fig. 3, against rotary dies 27, 29 at station 1, the edges of the sheets being slightly bent and longitudinal and transverse corrugations formed. The bearings of rollers 23, 28 are spring urged towards the rollers 27, 29, cam followers 96 on the end of the shafts engaging a cam 95 controlled by a lever 93 so that each sheet is fed in turn between the rollers, the positions of the cam giving both sets of rollers open, the lower set only closed, both sets closed and both sets closed and the drive motor actuated. Seam flanges 41, 56 and 44 are formed on the upper and lower sheets and stations 2 and 3 and the break lines for the edges of the duct are marked at station 3, Fig. 5. The sheets are guided over an inner former 10 at station 4 and dies 66, 71, 69 at station 5, Fig. 7, bend the sheets round the former 10 and urge the sealing flanges into position. At station 7, Fig. 9, rotary dies 78, 81 press the sheets on to former 10 and the sealing flanges into engagement, to be squeezed together by camming members 83, 84, Fig. 15, at station 8. Rotary dies at station 9 are shaped to secure the seam by buttons 92, Fig. 16, at 3 inch intervals. Rotary dies at stations 10 and 11 flatten the seam if required. In a modification, the seams are made at the upper corners of the tube, the upper sheet being narrower than the lower sheet. A single motor drives the rotary dies through chains and gear trains and the whole is mounted on a frame supported on rollers.
