Abstract
1,092,870. Seaming; making tubes. REINHARDT MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. Sept. 22, 1965 [Jan. 30, 1965], No. 40338/65. Headings B3A, B3E and B3J. A method of seaming the edges of a sheet or joining the edges of different sheets as in the formation of pipes of rectangular cross-section, comprises bending one of the edges (76) through a right angle, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), folding a second edge (75) about the first in several steps, Figs. 7-10 (not shown), and then bending the connected edges against an adjacent portion of the sheet, Figs. 11-13 (not shown). The edges are seamed by nine pairs of rolls 21- 29 of which both rolls of each pair 23, 24, 26, 27 are mounted on the right-hand inclined sidewall of a trough (3, Fig. 14 and Fig. 16 (not shown), depicted as displaced by 45 degrees) in the casing 1. One of the rolls of each of the remaining pairs 21, 22, 25, 28, 29 is mounted on the left-hand trough-wall while the cooperating rolls are carried by a cantilever beam 41 fixed to the casing by a plate 50 between rolls 22, 23, where the seam is still open. One of each pair of rolls is mounted resiliently, by springs (35, 36, Fig. 14), with its shaft (11) in a pivotal bearing (14). Rails (53, 53<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 15) on opposite sides of the plate 50 guide the edges between the second and third rolling stages. A motor, through a clutch, drives a shaft (4, Figs. 3 and 4) carrying worm gears (5, 6, 7) for driving the rolls. Rolls 21, 22, through gearing, are driven by the worm (5); rolls 23, 24, 26, 27 are driven by one of the worms (6) and the remaining rolls by another of the worms (7). In a modification, parallel sets of rolls 21, 22 are provided when the edges (75, 76) are in the same plane, the additional set flanging edge 75 in preparation for stage three (Fig. 7) of the seaming operation.
