Abstract
1355534 Controlling roll gap SIEMENS AG 28 May 1971 [30 May 1970] 18114/71 Heading G4H The roll gap of a rolling mill is controlled in response to roll force signals which exceed a stored value related to the eccentricity of the rolls and other stand imperfections, which is determined by measuring the force while the rolls are run in contact with each other under their nominal load. The outputs of two force transducers 4 are combined at 3 and amplified at 2. Increasing and decreasing values are detected by respective devices 5, 6 and converted into respective pulse trains at 7. Feedback is provided by a forward/backward counter 8 and a d/a converter 9. The output pulses from 7 pass to an undisclosed logic circuit 10. During the measuring phase they are gated by a signal t 0 to two counters 11, 12; 11 counts upwards only and 12 up and down but not below zero. It is stated that at the the end of the measuring period 11 will have a count which represents the difference between the maximum and minimum forces due to imperfections. During rolling 12 operates continuously and its count is compared at 13 with that stored in 11. When 12 exceeds 11, showing excessive rolling force, the roll gap is decreased, and when 12 drops to zero the next backward counting pulse, detected at 14, (showing an insufficient force) the gap is increased. In an alternative (Fig. 3, not shown) the stored value is converted to an analogue value which provides additional feedback to amplifier 2.
