Abstract

[Also in Division G3] In a method and apparatus for rolling strip, detectors spaced across the width of a strip detect unevenness of the strip by detecting the amplitude of vibration of the strip in the direction of the strip thickness and the roll crown and rolling load of the mill are automatically controlled in response to the detected amplitudes. The apparatus comprises rolls 2 and backup rolls 3. Detectors 6A, 6B, 6C produce signals A, B and C which are transmitted via synchronous rectifier circuits 7A, 7B, 7C to amplitude circuits 8A, 8B, 8C, where a D.C. signal is passed to circuits 9, 10 and 11. Circuit 11 produces an output y=A-C which controls the total rolling load exerted by screw-downs 14, 14<SP>1</SP> and circuit 10 produces a signal x=A-B which controls the means 13, 13<SP>1</SP> which alter the roll crown. Circuit 9 is a discriminating circuit which delays operation of circuit 10 while circuit 11 is operating to balance the total rolling load.
