Abstract
1354797 Drying sheets or webs D J M CHAMOUTON 21 Sept 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 43852/71 Heading F4G In a method of drying materials such as sheets or webs 1 of paper, the material is passed through an enclosure 8 which is substantially sealed from the external atmosphere and is contacted with a drying member, e.g. rotary cylinders 2 to liberate steam from the material. The drying member is heated from the inside with compressed steam which condenses inside the member during the liberation of steam from the material. The condensate is conducted by pipe-line 4 through a pressure reducing device 7 and reconverted into steam in a heat exchanger 6, for example, using steam liberated from the material and passing along pipe-line 10. Pipeline 4, device 7, exchanger 6 steam pipe-line 3 and compressor 5 all form a closed circuit. Steam generated by the material is maintained at a pressure slightly above atmospheric, in the apparatus shown, to prevent ingress of air at slits 9. In the particular apparatus shown, steam introduction lines 13, 18 and 15, 16 are used for initiating the steam cycle and scavenging air from the enclosure 8 respectively. Lines 23, 24 remove excess water from pipe-line 4, pump 19 removes non-condensable products from cylinders 2, and circuit 14 supplies water by means of pump 17 to saturate the steam compressed by compressor 5. The temperature in the enclosure and the moisture content of the paper web is controlled by an electrical circuit in which temperature sensor 25 connected to bridge 26 balanced so that a variation is signalled to amplifier 27, which via relays 28 and servo-motor 29 controls the speed of the motor 32 of compressor 5. Moisture sensor 33 similarly is linked to servomotor 37 which controls a valve in pressure reducing device 7. The operating frequencies of the two control circuits are substantially different to prevent cross-coupling.
