Abstract

1302378 Drying webs DOMINION ENG WORKS Ltd 12 Dec 1969 [31 Dec 1968] 60800/69 Heading F4G Drying defects of a web such as curling and cockling are reduced by subjecting the web to a warm moist atmosphere after it has been dried on heated rollers. One of the rollers 13 of the drying section of a paper making machine is shifted out of line to make room for an enclosure 12. The enclosure 12 houses blow boxes 22 to which is supplied a steam/air mixture having a dry bulb temperature 10-50‹ F. above the temperature of the web 21. These blow boxes are adjustable on rollers 25<SP>1</SP> to positions where the web travel is stabilized. The steam/air mixture retards the drying process in the enclosure 12, but as it permits a higher roll temperature, the overall drying rate is improved. A heater 27 may be provided in the enclosure. An arrangement of valves and plenums is described for mixing air from the main dryer hood with steam from the dryer cylinders and heating the mixture to a predetermined temperature for supply to the blow boxes.
