Abstract
1353661 Beam way and switching system E SVENSSON 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970] 21821/71 Heading B7L A beam way system for a train comprises a plurality of inverted U-shaped prestressed concrete beams 28, of which alternate beam sections 22 are supported on bases 32, 36 by pairs of columns 38, each beam having on its top surface a centrally disposed train stabilizer rail 30 formed with tracks on its upwardly and outwardly diverging sides for engagement by stabilizer wheels of a train 26 while drive wheels of the train engage running surfaces on each side of the rail 30, and the beam way system is provided with a switch in the form of a Y- shaped beam 66 having a flexible stabilizer rail 68 fixed at the base of the Y to the stabilizer rail 30 of a first length of beam way while the other end of the rail 68 is movable by a cable and pulleys located in a brace 78 between the arms of the Y selectively to connect with the stabilizer rails of second and third lengths of beam way. The alternate beam sections 22 are supportingly connected to intermediate beam sections 24 by step and shelf joints which may be fixed or expansion joints. The drive wheels of the train may have pneumatic rubber tyres or may comprise adjacent pairs whereof one wheel is of smaller diameter and has a solid rubber tyre to safeguard against deflation of the other wheel. Alternatively steel driving wheels may engage steel rails formed in the upper surface of the beam 28 during casting thereof. In alternative embodiments the drive wheels and optionally the stabilizer wheels are replaced by air cushions and a linear magnetic propulsion system, aeroplane type propeller, or jet engine is used. The latter embodiments of trains are used with a ground level beam way having an upstanding stabilizer rail.
