Abstract

1352625 Pitch GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP 20 Oct 1971 [28 Oct 1970] 48812/71 Heading C5E A first method of preparing spinnable pitch comprises (a) forming pitch into about -100 mesh particles; (b) contacting the particles with a first solvent to dissolve 10 to 30% of the pitch; (c) separating the solvent and dissolved pitch from the undissolved particles; (d) extracting the undissolved particles with a second solvent to dissolve at least 45% of the pitch, based on the quantity of starting pitch; (e) separating the undissolved material from the mixture; and (f) evaporating the solvent from the resulting solution to leave a residue of spinnable pitch. A second method of preparing spinnable pitch comprises (a) extracting pitch with a first solvent to dissolve at least 45% of the pitch; (b) separating the undissolved material from the mixture; (c) evaporating the solvent from the solution to leave a pitch; (d) forming the pitch into about -100 mesh particles; (e) contacting the particles with a second solvent to dissolve 10 to 30% of the pitch, based on the quantity of starting pitch; and (f) separating the solvent and the dissolved pitch from the particles to leave a spinnable pitch residue. The pitch treated can be obtained from petroleum, coal tar or the pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride. The spinnable pitch made is suitable for the production of carbon fibres. The first and second solvents can be the same or different and the two contacting steps can be carried out at the same or different temperatures. The solvents used in the Examples are benzene, quinoline and mixtures of benzene with hexane, acetone, pyridine or quinoline; various other suitable solvents are listed.
