Abstract

1365123 Carbon containing particles HLUHLEICH 10 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 37460/71 Heading C1A Coated particulate carbonizable material for use in making graphite, is made by forming a slurry from a mixture of the particulate material, a solvent, and a binding material which is partially or completely soluble in the solvent and which consists of organic compounds which are convertible by coking into essentially pure carbon, dispersing the slurry in a liquid with which the solvent is soluble but in which the binding agent is insoluble or only difficultly soluble, thereby forming an unstable emulsion from which the particulate material coated with the binding agent deposits as a paste-like mass which is recovered, dried, and, if desired, ground to a chosen grain size. The slurry may be sprayed or poured into the liquid. The particulate material may be anthracite coke, petroleum coke, natural graphite or soot. The binding material may be pitch, tar or a synthetic resin such as an organic solvent soluble phenolaldehyde condensate. The solvent may be methanol, benzene, xylol or nitrobenzene and the liquid methanol, water, or mixtures thereof.
