Abstract
1395340 Forming carbon bodies from coated filler particles KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 29 June 1972 [30 June 1971 2 July 1971] 42093/72 Divided out of 1395339 Heading C1A A shaped body of carbonaceous material is produced by (i) forming a non-dry green body without substantial application of pressure by moulding or shaping a sludge or paste consisting of binder coated carbonaceous particles with a small quantity of liquid, the surface of the particles being substantially completely covered by the binder, (ii) drying the green body to remove the liquid and (iii) carbonizing the green body. The sludge or paste may be prepared in or introduced into the mould, it may also be a kneadable mass which is self supporting when shaped and is shaped directly into the body. A precursor sludge may be used to form the desired sludge or paste by first drying the precursor and then introducing sufficient liquid into the dried material to give the desired sludge, before or after the shaping step. The liquid used may be one in which the binder is not or is only slightly soluble, or is swellable to form a paste which is then shaped. When the liquid is to be introduced into a mould containing the dried material, it may be introduced by exposing the material to the vapour of the liquid which then condenses on to the material, the liquid being one in which the binder is completely or partially soluble. The proportion of binder in the sludge or paste may be more than 25% by wt. The desired sludge or paste or the precursor sludge or paste may be obtained by forming a suspension of the carbonaceous particles in a solvent having a binder wholly or partially dissolved therein, and then introducing the suspension through a nozzle into a mixing chamber containing a liquid with which the solvent is miscible but in which the binder is insoluble or only sparingly soluble thereby causing deposition of the binder as a coating on the particles and recovering the so coated particles as a sludge or paste, e.g. by filtration or decantation. The mixture in the mixing chamber may be heated to facilitate the separation of the binder coated particles. The carbonaceous particles may be lamp black, powdered coke or graphite, and the binder may be pitch, tar, or synthetic resin, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde resin; graphite is the preferred filler. Methanol is specified as a solvent with water as the carrier liquid. The graphite may have a grain size of 0À06 mm.
