Abstract
1437077 Coal tar of increased viscosity BRITISH STEEL CORP (CHEMICALS) Ltd 17 Aug 1973 [21 Aug 1972] 38929/72 Heading C5E The viscosity of coal tar material is increased by subjecting the material to shear in an oxidizing atmosphere. The process may be conducted at 140‹ to 277‹ C. The material may be crude or refined coal tar, oils and pitches, such as the coal tar fractions naphthalene oil, wash oil, anthracene or heavy oil. The process may be conducted using coal tar pitch at 140‹ to 190‹ C. with the oxidizing atmosphere produced by flowing atmospheric air over the pitch at the rate of 1100 to 2300 mls. per kg per minute. Heat is removed during the process to prevent undesirable distillation and the shear may be applied by a shearing head comprising a rotor and shearing ring, the rate of shear being above 18,000 sec<SP>-1</SP>.
