1351835 Modulating light BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 28 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 30240/71 Heading H4F A garnet of the formula Y 3-x Gd x , Fe 5 O 12 , where 0 # x # 3, is used as a Faraday effect element, for example for linearly polarized microwaves or for optical wavelength 1-7 Á, to give a rotation # of the plane of polarization given by where M is the magnetization, M is the vector of the garnet magnetization projected on to the radiation direction #r, l is the distance travelled by the radiation, and α F is a constant for the garnet which is dependent on temperature and the radiation wavelength. To reduce the effect of temperature variation on #, the garnet is operated at a temperature where dα F /dT is substantially zero, and detailed figures are provided for several values of x and for wavelengths of 1À15 Á and 6 Á. By allowing dα F /dT to be somewhat different from zero, a larger value of α F may be obtained for a particular operating temperature by altering the value of x appropriately. The Faraday element may be used for measuring an electric current, from the induced magnetic field.
