Abstract

1420050 Microwave circulators; permanent magnets THOMSON-CSF 14 Nov 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 52921/73 Headings H1W and H1P Operation of an X-band high-power, Y- junction, H-plane circulator, at temperatures between -40‹C. and +85‹C. is secured by using for the ferrimagnetic element a material having a spin-wave linewidth below 10 oersteds, and a biasing field which is capable of saturating the material, stronger than the field associated with minimum critical power and close to the limit beyond which non-linear effects are negligible. "Critical power" is defined as the input power above which losses between coupled ports, begin to rise rapidly (see Fig. 1, not shown) and, as shown in Fig. 2, it varies with the applied magnetic field. A field is chosen above the value M corresponding to minimum critical power and close to the limiting field H L . Examples of materials suitable for the ferrimagnetic elements are: Y 3-3x Gd 3x Fe 5 O 12 (x = 0À3Œ10%), Y 3 Fe 5-5y Al 5y O 12 (y=0À074Œ10%). The circulator (Figs. 3, 4, 5, not shown) is of conventional construction using ferrite elements mounted on aluminium discs and samariumcobalt permanent magnets.
