Abstract
1350784 Heat-treating steel KOBE SEISKOSHO KK [trading as KOBE STEEL Ltd] 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 27103/71 Heading C7A Cold - worked steel containing a grain-refining element is heated for at least 5 minutes to a temperature between that of ferrite recrystallization and A 3 to bring about recrystallization of the ferrite structure, and is then further heated to a temperature between A 3 and the austenitic grain coarsening temperature to produce a uniform austenitic structure. Prior to the above treatment the steel may be heated to above 1000 C possibly combined with hot working for at least 5 minutes to dissociate carbide nitride or oxide grain refining phases, cooled at more than 5C/minute to a temperature in the range 500-900C, heated to a temperature between 500 C and A 3 for over 5 minutes to re-precipitate those phases in finely despersed form, and then cold worked. Intermediate anneals during the latter operation are carried out below A 1 , while the final heating to the austenite range may include a carburization step. As exemplified the process is applied to steels containing by weight together with one or more of Al, Zr, Ti, V, Nb, Ta or a rare earth metal.
