Abstract

1348982 Testing physical properties electrically DICKINSON ROBINSON GROUP 20 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 23417/70 Heading G1N The continuity of a seam of adhesive on a moving web of paper or on moving carton blanks, or the presence of a plain or magnetic ink stripe on a moving material is detected by measuring the capacitive coupling between a pair of electrodes close to or contacting the same surface of the tested article in the region where the adhesive or ink should be. As shown, a seam 14 of adhesive is applied by a roller 12 to bag-making paper in a tubing machine. Three brass strip electrodes 18, 19, 20 contact the undersurface of the paper. Electrode 18 is connected to an electrical pulse generator and electrodes 19, 20 to a differential amplifier, electrode 20 providing compensation for variations in the moisture content of the paper. Detected discontinuities may be automatically marked or the paper may be automatically stopped. For testing carton blanks, the output of the electrodes is gated so as to be measured only when a blank is passing over the electrodes.
