985, 428. Measuring electrically; capacitance measurements. WAYNE KERR LABORATORIES Ltd., and R. CALVERT. Dec. 5, 1961 [Dec. 14, 1960], No. 42955/60. Headings G1N and G1U. Two mechanically coupled capacitive probes 14,15 (Fig. 1), having electrodes of the same surface area, are applied to determine the thickness and dielectric constant of a layer of material 10 in close contact with a support surface 11, probe 15 and support 11 producing a signal proportional to the thickness of the layer, which is applied to probe 14 and support 11 to determine its dielectric constant. Guard electrodes 16, 17 are provided, connected to the outer conductors of coaxial cables 18, 19. The capacitance between probe 15 and plate 11 is connected in the feedback path of a high gain amplifier 20 (Fig. 2) fed from a constant A.C. source 21, and a meter 22 across the output indicates the thickness of the layer 10. The output is fed to a second high gain amplifier 25 through the capacitance between probe 14 and plate 11, and a meter 28 in its feedback path indicates the dielectric constant of the layer 10, which is also indicative of the moisture content, or larger proportion of the material 10 comprises two layers of known differing dielectric constants.
