Abstract

1304810 Measuring volume electrically JAROCINSKI ZAKLAD PRZEMYSLU MASEYNOWEGO LESNICTWA PRZEDSIEBIORSTWO PANSTWOWE 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 23971/71 Heading G1N [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for measuring the volume of a log 2 comprises a roller conveyer 3, a photo-electric sensor 8 for determining the length of the log by measuring the time taken for the log to be conveyed past a fixed point and producing a first output signal proportional thereto, a controller 23 responsive to the signal for stopping the conveyer with the centre of the log aligned with a reference mark 12, and a device 14 for measuring the diameter of the centre of the log and producing a second output signal, the two output signals being multiplied to determine the volume of the log. The sensor 8 controls a timing circuit 10 which feeds a signal to a counter 22 proportional to the length of the log. A second photo-electric sensor 9 detects the front of the log and after a time determined by the circuit 10, the controller 23 stops the conveyer with the centre of the log at the mark 12. A pneumatically operated probe 15 is then moved into contact with the log and adjusts the position of a sliding contact 21 on a resistor 20, wound such that the output current fed to the counter 22 is proportional to the square of the log diameter.
