Abstract

1344538 Hot gas engines PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N V 19 April 1971 [6 March 1970] 23031/71 Heading F1S In a hot gas engine fuel 20 and air 21 are supplied to a burner device 19 and the products of combustion are conducted successively past first and second parts of the heater 10 to give up thermal energy thereto. The quantity of air supplied to the burner is smaller than the quantity which stoichiometrically corresponds to the quantity of fuel supplied and between the first and second heater parts the products flow through a space 18 to which further combustion air is supplied (23). The quantities of air supplied are such that the exhausted combustion products are substantially free from nitrogen oxides. The fuel may be hydrogen. One or more catalysts may be utilised. Finely divided platinum may be used as a catalyst. The exhaust gases flow (26) to a preheater 24 for the combustion air.
