Abstract

1391509 Purifying exhaust gases FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 15 June 1972 [25 Aug 1971] 27943/72 Heading F1B A process to decrease the quantity of nitrogen oxides in I. C. engine combustion products comprises supplying the engine with a fuel/air mixture that produces combustion products which as a whole have chemically reducing properties and contacting the combustion products with ruthenium or osmium to reduce nitrogen oxides in the combustion products without producing any substantial amount of ammonia. Fig.2 shows a catalytic converter 20 containing a support structure 24 of ceramic, e.g. cordierite or spodumene, or a high temperature resistant metal, e.g. stainless steel or nickel alloy. Structure 24 has passages 26 formed in it, finely divided particles of ruthenium or osmium being distributed along the passages.
