1342367 Handling coke oven lids CLARKE CHAPMAN-JOHN THOMPSON Ltd 9 Dec 1971 [3 Oct 1970] 42263/70 Heading C5E [Also in Division F4] A charging car for a coke oven battery has a trolley 17 which is horizontally movable on rails and carries a lifting arm 27 provided with a device, e.g. claws, clamp or electromagnet 29, for engaging an oven lid 15, whereby raising of the arm 27, movement of the trolley 17, lowering of a delivery pipe 9 over an oven opening 13, and raising of a valve 7, is initiated in that order by anticlockwise rotation of a shaft 33 journalled in the car. The apparatus operates as follows: 90 degrees rotation of the shaft 33 causes a cam 51 bearing on a rod 41 to lift the arm 27 and parts 29, 15, through a lever 37 and chain 35, an arm 53 fixed on an axle 39 rotating until a roller 55 engages a rail (57) Fig. 3 (not shown) which supports the arm 27 &c. in the raised position. Simultaneously a roller 69 on a fixed crank 67 on the shaft 33 engages a claw 65 on a rod 61 connected at 63 to the trolley, and rotation of a further 180 degrees draws the trolley to the position 17<SP>1</SP>. Just before this point in the sequence, a roller 85 on a fixed crank 87 on the shaft 33 engages a claw 81 on an arm 79 to lower the pipe 9 through a lever 77, and a pair of quadrants 73 and chains 71. After 270 degrees rotation of the shaft 33, a fixed crank 103, see Fig. 5, engages a pin 104 on a loose crank 105 which is thereafter rotated through a further 135 degrees until it contacts a lug 106 on a loose crank 101 which is connected through a rod 99, quadrant 95, and chain 91 with the valve 7 of a coal hopper 3. A further 135 degrees rotation then raises the valve 7, see Fig. 2 (not shown). The machine is operated in reverse order when charging is completed.
