Abstract
1342066 Airships H PAPST 1 Sept 1970 [9 Sept 1969] 41841/70 Headings B7W and B7G An airship, used in transporting a useful buoyant gas or gas mixture by the method claimed in Specification 1,342,067, comprises an engine, an envelope 40 for containing said buoyant gases, flexible walls 7, 33 inside the envelope for subdividing the interior of the envelope into separate compartments and separate gas intake and outlet openings 15, 16, 17 associated with each compartment, whereby the volumes of the separate compartments or groups of compartments can be varied by filling one compartment or one group of compartments and emptying a complementary compartment or group of compartments or vice versa, by pressure, from zero to the full content of the envelope. The space between the walls 33 is occupied, when full by the buoyant gases and the walls 33 are positioned near the outer walls 7. As shown the walls 33 are involuted to the centre of the envelope 40, the buoyant gases having been discharged through ports 16 by varying pressure in compartments 3a, 4a, formed between walls 33 and 7 by admitting air or steam through ports 15 and 17. Several of each of the walls 33 or 7 may be provided so that several different buoyant gases may be carried. The envelope 40 is formed of radial stays 45 connecting walls 42, 43, 44 and 41 and thin heat reflecting foils to form a double walled structure which may be filled with pressurized gas to prevent leakage of buoyant gas. When the airship lands a keel frame 10, strapped on to the hull of the airship and formed with a suction pad having a resilient seal 24, grips the ground, the intake from a fan 6 withdrawing air from the space formed by the ground and the seal 24. Tubular members 23 of the keel frame 10 may act as fuel tanks. The airship is steered and propelled by a jet propulsion device 9 described in detail in Specification 1,191,321.
