Abstract
1341488 Two-part couplings VIKING INDUSTRIES Inc 26 Aug 1971 [26 Aug 1970] 40139/71 Heading H2E One part of a two part coupling comprises a contact-housing frame 12 for coupling to a complementary frame of the other part and has a pair of stepped flanges extending from each end, a hood 14 having a wire-receiving aperture 34 and slots for receiving the frame flanges at either end, and a coupling member or clamp 16 having slots for the frame flanges at one end and hood engaging projections 66 for entering the slots in the hood. The frame 12 has a shroud 22 enclosing the contacts 18 and identical fastener portions 26, 28 at each end comprising flanges 48, 48A with stepped parts 64A. The resilient insulating hood 14 encloses the rear portion 24 of the frame where wires are connected to the contacts 18 and comprises a first end 30 with a fastening portion 36 consisting of two flanges 38, 40 forming two slots 44, 46 which can slide over either fastener portion 26, 28 of the frame (but 26 as shown) so that the flanges 48 enter the slots 44, 46; the other end of the hood engaged by the clamp comprises an aperture 34 for receiving the wires and slots 70, 72 and flanges 78, 80 formed in the hood side-walls 50, 52. The clamp 16 comprises a resilient housing 54 with two slots 56, 58 for engaging the flanges 48A (as shown) on the frame, fingers 60, 62 with hooks 63 for fitting behind the stepped parts 64A, two projections 66, 68 which are received in the hood slots 70, 72 and two slots 74, 76 which receive the hood flanges 78, 80. A clamp member 82 is slidably mounted on the clamp by a screw 86 which is turned so that the clamp member bears against the wires in the hood aperture 34. Thus the clamp can be attached to the frame in either direction with the wires leaving from either end as desired. Two mated coupling parts are held together by screws (96, 98) extending through an aperture (100) in the hood and a hole (12) in the frame where it engages threaded inserts (104, 104<SP>1</SP>). The contacts (Figs. 7-9, not shown) are formed from a folded sheet and comprise a loop (120), a tang (136), an end wall (138), side walls (130, 132) inclined at, say, 45 degrees to a base portion and cutting blades (126, 128) perpendicular to the side walls. An insulated wire (124) is inserted to abut the end wall (138) and the side walls (130, 132) are bent towards each other so that the blades (126, 128) cut the insulation. In another contact (Fig. 10, not shown) the cutting blades are omitted and the wire is connected by crimping and/or soldering, there being indentations (146, 148) in the side walls for centring the wire conductors while the end wall (150) serves additionally to prevent flow of solder.
