Abstract
1,076,687. Terminals. CUTLER-HAMMER Inc. Nov. 16, 1965 [Nov. 16, 1964], No. 48571/65. Heading H2E. An electrical connector comprises an insulating housing 2 having a recess 4 therein bounded on one side by a terminal plate 8, one wall 4b of the recess opposite the terminal being inclined at an angle to the terminal plate, and one leg 10b of a resilient U-shaped terminal clip 10 resting against that wall, the other leg 10a initially bearing against the terminal plate 8. The bared end 12 of a wire is inserted through an aperture 6 and is forced between the leg 10a of the clip, and the plate. If the wire is pulled the clip tends to pivot and causes arm 10b also to grip the wire. The aperture 6 has an elongated asymmetrical cross-section, and the wire is inserted in the widest portion, the narrower portion being used to receive a tool to release the wire. The plate 8 may have a right-angled edge portion extending parallel to the direction of insertion of the wire, and the clip may have the ends of its arms angled to guide the wire into the corner of the terminal (Figs. 10, 11 and 12, not shown). The walls of the recess may also be shaped, Fig. 6 (not shown), to urge the conductor against one wall of the recess. A stranded or solid core conductor may be inserted into the connector, the stranded conductor preferably having been stiffened prior to insertion, by dipping it in solder. The body of the insulating housing may have a lid 2b to cover the plate 8.
