Abstract

1,225,305. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. 13 Sept., 1968 [27 Sept., 1967; 29 Jan., 1968], No. 43785/68. Heading H2E. An electrical connector 24, Fig. 1, comprises an elongate tubular metal body of rectangular cross-section having wire-engaging fingers 50 extending from opposite sides of the internal wall of the body across the interior, in interdigitated relationship, to a position adjacent the internal wall such that wires 48 inserted through an open end of the body are resiliently retained against the internal wall. Subsequently, the wires are soldered to the connector. The fingers 50 have at their free ends, portions (54, Fig. 4, not shown), bent towards the open end of the body. The connector may have a contact spring (78, Fig. 2, not shown) extending alongside an external wall to resiliently engage a conductor on a printed circuit panel inserted between the spring (78) and external wall. The connector 24 fits into a receptacle 30 which is gernally U-shaped, having two side walls 7 having flanges (60, Fig. 8, not shown) at their remote ends co-operating with projections 72 to engage an insulating panel 34. Electrical contact to the connector 24 is ensured by cantilever springs 66 which engage the connector 24. A circular connector 26 fits into a receptacle 32 which is generally U-shaped and is mounted on the panel 34 in the same way as receptacle 30 by flanges (86), Fig. 12, not shown, and projections (83), Fig. 14, not shown. The receptacle 32 has a hole, of slightly less diameter than the connector 26, in the yoke 85 which resiliently grips the connector 26, when it is inserted through the hole, by means of slots 90. An electrical tapping socket 200, Fig. 16, fits over and resiliently grips the receptacle 130 and has a base portion 146 from which extend perpendicularly two side walls 162 which have parallel portions 154 and closer portions 158 which grip the receptacle 130. Flanges 160 at the end of the side wall 162 define, with the side walls and base portion 146, a generally enclosed space. A connector 148 for a wire is attached to the base portion 146. The tapping socket 200 is generally of the same trapezoidal shape as the receptacle 130 and has detents 164 to engage with the receptacle 130 to ensure secure contact.
