Abstract
1340230 Preparation of a silica gel W R GRACE & CO 14 Sept 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 42794/71 Heading C1A A method for producing a porous silica gel comprises: adding to an alkali metal silicate solution a water soluble compound to make the silica obtained from it by acidification less soluble; adding an acid to this alkali metal silicate solution so as to reduce the pH to a value within the range 11À2 to 10À6 and form a silica hydrosol; allowing the silica hydrosol to set to a silica hydrogel; ageing the silica hydrogel; acidifying the silica hydrogel to reduce the pH to a value within the range 10 to 3; and recovering and washing the silica hydrogel thus obtained. The water soluble compound added to the silicate solution acts similarly to a coacervating agent and is preferably ammonia. Preferably the acid used to lower the pH is sulphuric acid or carbon dioxide.
