Abstract

1283399 Solubilized alginate WALLACE CAMERON & CO Ltd 17 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 46034/69 Addition to 1231506 Heading C3U Solubilized calcium-containing alginic material is produced by acidifying calcium alginate with a calculated quantity of acid sufficient to remove a desired amount of calcium, reacting the acidified calcium alginate with an excess of at least one base selected from ammonia, amines and substituted amines, and removing excess base by washing. The calcium alginate may be in the form of gauze, powder or filament, and may be acidified with HCl. The base may be ethylene diamine, an amino-phenol, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine, lignocain, novocain or morphine. The reaction is preferably effected in a solvent, which may be a mixture of water and isopropanol or industrial methylated spirit. The volume ratio of alcohol to water may be 1 : 4 to 4 : 1.
