Abstract

1339489 Bonded fibre fabrics BAYER AG 7 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 41593/71 Heading D1R High bulk fleeces autogenously bonded with fibres of 50% to 100% saponified ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer are compared with fleeces bonded by other binder fibres or by spraying with an aqueous dispersion. The inventive fleece comprises 5% to 50% by weight of binder fibres, melting point 110‹C to 130‹C the molar ratio before saponification being from 1:1 to 1:20 of vinyl acetate to ethylene. Copolymerisation is carried out at 200 to 4000 atmospheres and 30 to 250‹C, to give an average molecular weight of 10,000 to 50,000. Saponification is carried out by methanol or ethanol, catalysed by anhydrous sodium methoxide or sodium ethoxide, or by hydrogen chloride, sulphuric acid or toluene sulphonic acid. The remaining fibres are one or more of cotton, regenerated cellulose wool, acetyl cellulose, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene terephthalate, polyesteramide, polyamide and polyurethane. The fibres are from 3.3 to 22 dtex, are 40mm to 100mm long if carded and crosslapped and 5mm to 20mm long if wet laid. Bonding is by heating to 110‹C and 150‹C. Comparison fleece A, of carded staple polyethylene terephthalate fibres, is sprayed on one side with a dispersion, of copolymerised methyl acrylate/butyl acrylate plus crosslinking agent, dried, sprayed on the other side and dried again. Fleece B is of carded 80% polyethylene terephthalate 20% vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer fibres, bonded by heating at 160‹C. Fleece C comprises clipped wool and 2:1 nylon 6/nylon 6,6 copolymer, bonded by heating at 180‹C.
