Abstract

1338839 Boring earth and rock SOC NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE 11 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 14299/71 Heading E1F An unspecified measuring instrument is contained in a cavity 30 of a housing 2, 3, 4 suspended by resilient members such as 10 in a drill collar 1 forming part of a drill string, and intermittently actuates a valve 5 to close a flow passage 7A so that the increased pressure of drilling fluid above the housing forces a valve ring 21 against a seat 22 closing further passages 8A to create a pressure pulse which is transmitted through the drilling fluid to the surface. Coded information may be transmitted from the bottom of the well by the pressure pulses caused by closing the valve 5. The resilient members are each formed of an elastomaric ring 12 having passages 20 and vulcanized to outer and inner metal rings 11, 13 supported on abutments on the drill collar 1 and housing respectively. The resilience of the rings 12 causes the valve 21-22 to open after the valve 5 has re-opened. The seat 22 may have an elastomeric lining seal 23. When the valve 5 is closed, fluid is by-passed through passages 6.
