Abstract

1363501 Boring earth &c SCHLUMBERGER INLAND SERVICES Inc 19 July 1971 [30 July 1970 (3)] 33742/71 Heading E1F [Also in Division Fl] Signals generated at the bottom of a drilling hole and representing measurements of drill weight, torque, borehole temperature and the like are transmitted to the borehole head by periodically closing a normally open obturating valve 41, 45, Figure 2, in the path 37, 38, 40 of down flowing drilling fluid in response to data signals; the valve portion 45 being moved towards its closed position by a solenoid 58 which when energised depresses a headed rod 43 against a spring 55 thereby placing the valve 45 in the flow path after which the rod 43 is further depressed into a bore 40 by drilling fluid pressure until a shoulder 48 of rod 43 depresses a head 49 of valve portion 41 thereby depressing the latter against a spring 56 to a position in which fluid port 38 is fully closed after which due to fluid pressure equalisation spring 50 lifts valve portion 45 and spring 56 lifts valve portion 41 thus allowing continued flow of drilling fluid through port 38. A turbine 30 upstream of the valve 41, 45 and driven by the drilling fluid continuously drives a generator 32 which provides electrical power for operating data-signalling means and hence the solenoid 58. In a modification, a valve 106, Figure 9, is held in the open position against a spring 124 by spring latch fingers 113 engaging lugs 114 on the valve stem 110 and when the latch is released on energising a solenoid 116 the valve 106 is depressed below a fluid inlet port 105 and then, due to the pressure rise in port 105,. the valve is further depressed into a slidable tube 107 which latter is then itself depressed by said fluid pressure rise to a position below the valve 106 thus equalising fluid pressure above and below valve 106 which latter is then returned by spring 112, to the latched position shown; solenoid 116 by this time being deenergised. In a further modification a sleeve valve (243) Figure 11C (not shown) is continuously rotated by a turbine driven generator shaft (250) Figure 11B (not shown) which is spliced to the valve stem (268). The valve is lowered to its closed position by a solenoid actuated rocking pawl 256 engaging a thread (254) on shaft (250) and is returned by spring means disengaging the pawl.
